Sustainable Development: Our Present and Future

“Sustainable development” is defined by the Brundtland Commission in 1987 as “Development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs”. The phrase has become an indispensable term in the world’s current and future growth paths. The 1992 United Nations Conference on Environment and Development in Rio de Janeiro kicked off the evolution of sustainable development as a major objective for the future. Prior to the meeting, the notion was brought to the attention of the public during the Stockholm UN Conference on the Human Environment in 1972. Given the fast changes in the earth’s environment, the acknowledgment of this notion as a future development objective by world leaders is one of the most significant milestones in human history.

Sustainable development and Entrepreneurship

Since the environment has been a source of development restrictions, the notion of sustainable development has been strongly related to ecological concerns. However, in order to achieve the overarching development aim envisioned by the United Nations’ sustainable development goals, socioeconomic and political factors must also be considered. Entrepreneurs and international organizations play a vital role in attaining long-term development goals in this regard. With these performers playing a bigger role, more people throughout the world are becoming involved. Growing knowledge about sustainable development is a significant component in this scenario of global pandemic, and these players provide a vital connection in extending the information base.

Environmental sustainability to Economic Sustainability

Aside from environmental sustainability, economic sustainability is also at the forefront. Producer-consumer relations involving the utilization of natural resources have a significant influence on the issue of sustainable development. The modern business enterprise and government economic planning “green economy” idea makes use of smart technology that has a lower environmental effect. Innovative technologies and the creation of new ways and means for obtaining renewable energy sources for development purposes have significantly decreased the negative effects of development and environmental deterioration. As a result, economic sustainable development benefits both markets and our planet’s general environmental circumstances.

The relevance of the notion of sustainable development extends beyond the movement’s environmental effect. True, the idea was developed to mitigate the harmful effects of over usage of natural resources. However, this viewpoint has shifted in a positive direction, and it now includes the planet’s general growth. This aspect has also attracted many stakeholders including governments, non- governmental organizations, private companies and philanthropists. Many parties, including governments, non-governmental organizations, commercial corporations, and philanthropists, have been drawn to this aspect. The worldwide scope of this concept has brought attention to concerns such as global warming and its impact on small island states in the Pacific, environmental degradation linked to illicit mining in African countries, and continuous wildfires on the South American and Australian continents. The increased awareness has also aided in the restoration or preservation of many small communities’ lost cultural traditions, such as sustainable farming techniques in India, Japan, and Vietnam.

Sustainable development: Our Present rather our Future

The pandemic has undoubtedly disrupted global order, but it has also provided us with an opportunity to consider and act on how the world should be in the future. The reliability and collaboration demonstrated by countries and communities throughout the world has once again shown the need of coordinating for the plant’s bright future. One such golden platform where our entire community may collaborate is the sustainable development project. The concept also promotes involvement from a diverse group of people. The aim of sustainable development may be achieved by everyone, from individuals to major corporations, making everyone accountable for our planet’s future.

Our present, rather than our future, may be described as sustainable development. During the colonial period, fast and unrestrained industrialization altered the face of the globe. Climate change, sea level rise, and an increase in global temperature are some of the current effects of such activities. Despite these negative consequences, sustainable development offers us the chance to right the wrongs. Although the principles may not provide a complete answer, they do point the path toward a greener future. The realization of these objectives is an additional task that must be addressed carefully. The implementations of these goals are another task that needs to be taken seriously. And several international leaders, including Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and French President Immanuel Macron, have spearheaded solar energy initiatives, with the African Union actively engaging in these conversations. These are the projects that lead to the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals. As a result, I think that sustainable development is our planet’s present and future.
